Meet our Apprentice - Vicky

As it is National Apprenticeship Week, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to introduce you to the excellent apprentices here at the heart of Kent County Council’s Skills and Employability team. Find out from them how their experience dispelled common misconceptions about apprenticeships and provided them with the skills and opportunities to excel in the workplace - This is Vicky's story!

What made you want to do an apprenticeship?

I had a year working before going to university and realised I learnt more through practical experience. I felt an apprenticeship would be more beneficial for me as it would allow me to use the skills I study.

Were you considering any other options before becoming an apprentice? If yes, what made your mind up?

I was planning on university, however, I felt I would learn more through working.

What were your biggest worries before starting your apprenticeship?

All my peers were in their first year of university, I worried that choosing the apprenticeship route may have been the wrong choice. However, I’m, glad I did something different now.

Did anything surprise you about your apprenticeship - did you have any misconceptions?

The main surprise for me was the amount of responsibility I was allowed to have. I think people can assume the apprentice is the person who only gets to do the boring jobs, but I have been able to take part in many great activities. E.g. Kent county show, radio interviews, Kent vision, KEiBA.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

Being involved in the promotion of apprenticeships. It is really nice to be able to encourage others to make the same choice as I did.

In what ways do you feel like you have benefited from your apprenticeship?

I have gained a lot of confidence in myself and what I can achieve. For example, when I started I was not a very confident public speaker, but now I present to students and business professionals all the time.
