As it is National Apprenticeship Week, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to introduce you to the excellent apprentices here at the heart of Kent County Council’s Skills and Employability team. Find out from them how their experience dispelled common misconceptions about apprenticeships and provided them with the skills and opportunities to excel in the workplace - This is Owen's story!
What made you want to do an apprenticeship?
The appeal of earning while you learn was a big plus for me. I had been out of education for a couple of years doing a different job that wasn’t taking me anywhere.
Were you considering any other options before becoming an apprentice? If yes, what changed your mind?
I did some work in Sports Coaching before I became an apprentice due to my interest in sport. But unfortunately this didn’t have any future career prospects and an apprenticeship was a great option for me to build a career.
What were your biggest worries before starting your apprenticeship?
Would I fit in with the team and would I be able to be of value to the team with no experience of what the team did. It turns out I had nothing to worry about!
Did anything surprise you about your apprenticeship - did you have any misconceptions?
I expected that I would need to do a lot of paperwork for my framework but I was surprised by how much of my day to day work covered my apprenticeship framework.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
Meeting new people and the challenge that the job brought. I also enjoyed doing a range of different tasks and learning what my strengths were.
In what ways do you feel like you have benefited from your apprenticeship?
I feel that it has given me a pathway and a realistic view of work. It has enabled me to create a life and provide stability for the future.
